Here's why we should be talking about death

My mum died when I was three so I had a bizarre obsession with death at a young age. If I kill myself will I be reunited with her? If my dad dies before I’m 16 will I become an orphan?

Since his death in 2011 – thankfully I was over a decade past orphan criteria age, although I still like to refer to myself as one (got to have some perks of being parentless, no?) – I have accepted that death is just something that happens.

It will happen to me. It will happen to you.

It will happen to everyone I love and even those that I don’t.

I’m OK with that. But what I’m not OK with is that people aren’t prepared to deal with death – be it losing someone themselves or being able to support those who have. Here’s why we need to start talking about death.
