Why we all must be actively anti-racist
The killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery this past month were more moments that highlighted just how inherent racism still is in society and particularly in policing in 2020.
Though these recent tragedies have been in the USA, this is isn’t just an American problem. In the UK black people are disproportionately more likely to have force used against them by police officers.
WHAT CAN WE ALL DO TO TACKLE THE SYSTEMATIC RACISM AND WHITE PRIVILEGE THAT OUR SOCIETIES ARE BUILT ON?
Do not share footage of someone being killed. This is not only a traumatic event for the victim but for anyone else involved or anyone triggered by seeing such actions. We do not need to see murder to know that racism exists and is inherent within our society and our institutions.
Instead, everyone needs to advocate, amplify and learn what it means to be anti-racist. Saying you’re not racist doesn’t go far enough - we need to a collective anti-racist movement that is actively working to bring down structural racism and a white supremacist world.
The burden of racism and racial inequality does not lie on the shoulders of people of colour. It is up to white people to work to dismantle a system that they benefit from.
